The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has issued a reminder for motorists to complete vital checks on five items before setting off on any August road trips. The government agency shared the advice on its official X page, urging drivers to inspect tyres, lights, brakes, windscreen and wipers, and fluid levels.
“Visiting friends and relatives this August? Check that your car’s safe to be on the road,” the post said. “Regularly check these five items: tyres, lights, brakes, windscreen and wipers, and fluid levels. And it applies any time you're going on a journey.”
Legal responsibility and penalties
As GOV.UK points out, drivers are responsible for ensuring their vehicle is roadworthy. While a current MOT certificate is required, it does not guarantee the car remains safe to drive, and drivers could be liable. Motorists can be fined up to £2,500, banned from driving, and given three penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
The advice says there are checks drivers should carry out every time they drive, including ensuring the windscreen, windows and mirrors are clean, all lights work, and the brakes work. The vehicle’s handbook will tell you how often to check engine oil, water level in the radiator or expansion tank, brake fluid level, battery, windscreen and rear window washer bottles, and tyres – which must have the correct tread depth and be free of cuts and defects.
Year-round advice and RAC guidance
It added: “The handbook will also tell you when your vehicle needs to be serviced.” It's also important to check the tyre tread, though the frequency of checks varies by vehicle.
While the advice is applicable year-round, many motorists will be on the road this month due to the school summer holidays. The RAC also shares advice for anyone preparing for a road trip on its website.
The experts said: “It’s crucial to take time to give your car the once-over before you hit the road. It’s particularly important to take seasonal weather into account; long distances and extra weight from luggage and passengers can put a bigger strain on your car.”
The RAC explained that many maintenance checks can be completed by drivers themselves, such as checking the oil, coolant, tyre pressure, tread depth, lights, and washer fluid. The advice added: “If there are any existing issues with the car, take it to a qualified mechanic to get these resolved – you don’t want to break down miles from home because of a minor problem that could have been fixed at your local garage.”
“Also make sure your car’s MOT is valid for the entirety of your road trip. For extra peace of mind, you could book your car in for a service before you travel.”
