DoorDash has partnered with Kroger to allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to have groceries delivered from Kroger-owned stores. Eligible customers can link their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to their DoorDash accounts to pay for qualifying items online.
The service is rolling out across nearly 2,700 Kroger-owned stores nationwide, including banners such as Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, and Ralphs. This aims to extend access to millions of households relying on food assistance.
Mike Goldblatt, Vice President of Enterprise Partnerships at DoorDash, stated: “Access to affordable food is fundamental. This collaboration with Kroger marks an important step forward for SNAP access nationwide.”
SNAP benefits cover approved grocery staples like fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and frozen foods, but not alcohol, hot prepared foods, or non-food items. At checkout, the system automatically applies SNAP funds to eligible items, with any remaining balance payable by other means. Standard fees, taxes, and tips are not covered by SNAP.
To promote the launch, DoorDash is offering $0 delivery fees on the first order from Kroger family brands when paying with an EBT card, for a limited time. Customers can adjust the SNAP amount applied to the order.
Social media reactions have been mixed. Some users noted Kroger already offers its own delivery service accepting SNAP EBT, with fees starting at $6.95. Others expressed concerns about potential reduced tips for delivery drivers, while supporters highlighted the benefits for those in food deserts or with limited transportation.
