Disney Plus viewers could save £60 with simple MSE tip

Disney Plus viewers could save £60 a year by using one method of payment, financial experts say. Money Saving Expert (MSE) shared the tip following a price hike on October 14.

Disney has raised the cost of all its plans for new and existing subscribers by up to £24 a year. Prices for a Disney+ subscription can vary, depending on the plan you choose. Its latest prices for people in the UK start at £6.99 for a monthly plan and rises to £159.90 for an annual plan.

How to save £60 with Disney Plus

MSE said the subscription service had "upped the cost of all its plans for the second year in a row for new and existing subscribers by up to £24 a year. But there are a few ways to cut costs."

MSE urges people to rethink what plan they really need to be on, and said a better payment method could be to choose a version with adverts. Even though it's an option many want to avoid, it could help keep an extra £60 in your pocket.

It suggests: "Consider choosing a cheaper plan. Switching from the monthly Standard plan to the monthly Standard with ads plan could save you £60 a year, for example."

Other ways to save on Disney Plus

Other ways to save include paying yearly rather than monthly. If you’re confident you’ll keep Disney+ for the full 12 months - and you can afford to pay upfront - an annual subscription can work out cheaper.

"For example, the cost of an annual Standard plan is £119.90 while the cost of paying monthly for 12 months is £143.88 - meaning you'd save £23.98 if you paid upfront," MSE says.

If you don’t have Disney+ yet, Money Saving Expert suggests checking for sign-up offers first. And this advice isn't just tied to Disney, as you may be able to pick up deals or discounts on a range of subscription services, such as through your mobile provider, or via schemes such as the Blue Light Card.

It’s also worth looking out for cashback offers from banks like Monzo, which have previously offered cashback for Disney+. Deals can change regularly, and what’s available now won’t always be the same, so it’s worth keeping an eye out.

Can I share my Disney+ subscription?

No. A Disney+ subscription cannot be shared outside of your Household. The subscription service explains a "household is a collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside there."

People outside of your Household can sign up for their own account to watch Disney+ or can be added on as an Extra Member.

An Extra Member add-on lets you share your Disney+ subscription with a friend or family member who doesn’t live in your Household. You can add one Extra Member per account.

They must be 18 or over, live in the same country or region as the account holder, and not already have an active Disney+ subscription. The add-on is charged monthly to the account holder, and Extra Members can’t change the plan or other account settings. The only account action they can take is to remove themselves as an Extra Member.

The number of devices you and the people in your Household can use to stream Disney+ varies depending on your plan:

  • Disney+ Standard with Ads: up to two devices at a time
  • Disney+ Standard: up to two devices at a time
  • Disney+ Premium: up to four devices at a time

MSE explains that when you pay the latest prices depends on whether you’re an existing customer and which plan you’re on. If you're new to Disney+, subscribers will pay the increased fee straight away, with it having already risen on October 14.

Monthly subscribers will move onto the new price from your next billing date on or after November 18. Meanwhile, annual subscribers will pay the new rate from their next renewal date on or after December 2. If you renew before then, you’ll stay on the current price for another year.
