A New York-based coffee company has issued a significant recall for its decaffeinated coffee pods after discovering they contain caffeine, posing a potential health risk to sensitive consumers. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now escalated the safety alert.
Recall Details and Elevated FDA Classification
Gimme Coffee, Inc. first announced a voluntary recall for its Gimme! Decaf de Agua Coffee Pods in October. The action was taken when it was found that the pods, marketed as decaffeinated, actually contained caffeine. Last week, the situation became more serious as the FDA elevated the recall to a Class II risk classification.
According to FDA guidelines, a Class II recall means that using the product might cause temporary or medically reversible health issues. The probability of severe consequences is considered remote, but the risk is present. For individuals with a sensitivity to caffeine, consuming these mislabelled pods could lead to adverse reactions.
How to Identify the Affected Products
The recall affects 252 boxes of coffee pods, each containing 10 pods. Consumers can identify the affected products by checking for the UPC code 051497457990. The outer packaging has a best-by date of October 15, 2025, while the inner packaging is marked with a best-by date of September 30, 2025.
These products were distributed to retail locations in ten American states: Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Consumer Advice and Company Response
While the product is safe for the general public, the FDA advises that most adults can safely consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine daily – roughly equivalent to two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee. However, those who avoid caffeine for medical or personal reasons are at risk.
As of October 24, Gimme Coffee had not received any customer complaints linked to the mix-up. The company urges anyone who has purchased the recalled pods to either contact them directly for a return or replacement, or take the product back to the place of purchase. Questions can be directed to Gimme Coffee via phone at (607) 273-0111 or by email at orders@gimmecoffee.com.
This incident follows another major coffee recall earlier in the year. In a separate case, Dollar General recalled specific lots of its Clover Valley Instant Coffee due to the potential presence of glass fragments. That recall, which affected products sold in 48 states, was initiated after a customer report. No injuries were reported in either recall.
