In a recent crumpet taste test, Warburtons came out on top, while Morrisons was deemed so awful it went straight in the bin. The test, prompted by a disappointing experience with a supermarket crumpet, compared offerings from Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose, and Warburtons.
Warburtons Takes the Crown
Warburtons 6 Original Crumpets, priced at 75p on offer (up to £1.10), scored 8/10. They were thick, spongy, and airy, allowing butter to sink in perfectly. The quality difference was visible, and the tester deemed it worth the extra cost.
Tesco and Waitrose Solid but Not Outstanding
Tesco Crumpets 6 Pack at 45p scored 6/10. They were thick with enough holes for butter, but not as springy or airy as Warburtons. A solid budget choice, the tester would happily eat them again.
Essential Waitrose Crumpets 8 Pack at 70p also scored 6/10. They were spongy and tasty, with butter melting to the bottom, but more dense than Warburtons. The tester would pay the extra for the brand.
Morrisons a Disaster
Morrisons Crumpets 6 Pack at 45p scored 0/10. The tester described them as tasting like a mouthful of flour stuffed into a cardboard loaf, with a grainy, claggy texture that sucked moisture from the mouth. They looked anaemic with haphazardly spaced holes. Two more crumpets from the pack were just as dire, and all went straight into the bin.
