Learning to use chopsticks is a skill that often takes time to master, especially for those in the Western world where knives and forks are the norm. But even seasoned users have been left baffled by a simple hack that prevents mess at the table.
A TikTok user named 'doctor.leesa' shared a video of a group dining out, where a man demonstrated the 'correct' way to break apart a pair of wooden chopsticks. Instead of simply snapping them apart, he broke off the top piece that connects them and used it as a chopstick rest.
The video, captioned 'Was today years old when I learned how to actually use chopsticks,' showed the man placing the snapped-off piece in front of a guest to rest the chopsticks on, avoiding direct contact with the table. Viewers were impressed, with one commenting: 'I thought you just rip the sticks apart from each other...' while another added: 'Asian here… legit, had no idea.'
However, some noted that not all chopsticks have this feature. One commenter explained: 'So that one specific brand that makes theirs like that but select few restaurant uses because it's not the cheapest. you haven't been doing it wrong. You just haven't had the right chopsticks.' Another shared a photo of standard chopsticks that lack the detachable top for a rest.
Despite the mixed reactions, the hack has sparked widespread curiosity, with one viewer writing: 'Who else ran to the kitchen to rummage thru the junk drawer to find some takeout chopsticks.'
