Shopping around can reduce the cost of school uniforms, according to consumer experts. With uniform lists due in September, comparing prices across supermarkets may help families save money.
A small difference per item adds up when buying polos, jumpers, trousers, skirts and shoes. Annual uniform spending is estimated at around £340 for primary school and £454 for secondary school, including PE kit and branded items.
Polo shirt price comparison
Consumer watchdog Which? compared prices for a basic white polo shirt, a common uniform requirement. It found that Aldi sold a two-pack for £1.75 during its June schoolwear event, working out at 88p per shirt. However, the deal may no longer be available as it was tied to a limited promotion.
Sainsbury's and Tesco both offer two-packs for £3 (about £1.50 each). Sainsbury's uniform is available via the Tu website or in-store, while Tesco sells through F&F online or in larger branches. Some stores like H&M charge up to £10 for a pack, making each shirt £5.
Regional differences and caps
Schools in Scotland and Wales do not have a legal cap on branded items, whereas England will enforce a cap from September 2026. Devolved governments encourage schools to keep costs down by allowing plain, supermarket-bought clothing in school colours.
