A bargain hunter from Derby was left stunned by the prices she encountered while charity shopping in an affluent town in Rutland. Lola Amuah, who appeared on BBC's Shift the Thrift earlier this year, visited a charity shop in Oakham and discovered designer items by brands such as Jimmy Choo, Gucci, and Burberry. However, the price tags left her amazed.
Designer Discoveries and Price Shock
Lola filmed her shopping trip, accompanied by her husband Pete. In the shop window, she spotted pairs of Jimmy Choo and Gucci shoes. Inside, she quickly found a Lanvin scarf, brand new with tags, priced at £18, and a DKNY handbag for £40. She also noticed a similar DKNY item on the shelves, noting that someone had donated both.
Pete discovered a leather handbag marked at £80. After examining it, they identified the label as Selva From Triad, made in Brazil—a brand neither recognized. Pete commented that while it was genuine leather, it was not full grain and thus not the best quality.
A Burberry silk scarf, locked in a glass cabinet, caught Lola's eye at £70, alongside a bracelet for £60. In the bric-a-brac section, she picked up an Andy Pandy branded mug. Pete noted he had seen the same mug elsewhere for just 50p, but here it was priced at £10, reduced from £15.
Social Media Reactions
Lola shared her experience on Instagram, prompting mixed reactions. One user criticized the prices, calling the shop overpriced and stating that such high prices were why they avoid charity shops in rich towns. Another commenter noted that Oakham has the most expensive charity shops. A third suggested that the items might have been donated after a local charity sale.
Despite the high prices, Lola remains a fan of charity shopping. She told the BBC, "It's way more sustainable, it saves money and it helps support charities as well. The adrenaline rush is there, just finding the gems."
