A comprehensive new survey has uncovered the lengths to which cat owners will go to secure the affection of their often-indifferent feline companions. More than half of cat owners believe their pets routinely ignore them, prompting a range of strategic behaviours designed to win them over.
The Struggle for Feline Approval
The poll, conducted with 2,000 cat owners, found that a significant 63% feel their cats dictate the terms of all interactions. This perceived aloofness drives owners to employ various tactics in hopes of gaining approval. Nearly half (49%) admit to actively spoiling their cats, with methods including extra cuddles, performing 'slow blinks' (25%), and upgrading their food quality (22%).
Daily Snubs and Demands
For many owners, the feline indifference is a daily reality. A quarter reported that their pets snub them throughout the day, only to demand attention the moment they sit down or attempt to relax. This paradoxical behaviour highlights the complex dynamics of human-cat relationships.
Celebrity Insights and Campaign Launch
The research was commissioned by SHEBA, which has partnered with Brit-nominated musician Cat Burns to launch its 'Ignored to Adored' campaign. Burns, who owns cats herself, notes that even chart-topping success does not guarantee feline affection.
Cat Burns remarked: "It's so funny to me - I'm about to go on tour, singing my songs to thousands of people, and our cats will literally just walk past me. They do not care. At all. I could be anybody. Nothing will humble you faster than a pet you're trying to win over. All they care about is how you make them feel, nothing else factors in."
Expert Analysis on Cat Behaviour
Pet behaviourist Dr. Tammie King from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute explained: "Cats tend to be more subtle, observant and will express their love towards us in unique ways." This subtlety often leads to misinterpretation by owners, who may mistake natural feline reserve for rejection.
Statistical Highlights of Feline Aloofness
The study revealed several striking statistics about cat behaviour:
- 20% of owners said their cat leaves the room when they enter
- 6% reported their cat chooses to leave the house completely
- 18% of those living with others felt the aloofness was particularly pointed, as their cat behaves differently with other household members
- One in ten owners have spent significant time researching ways to make their cat love them
Industry Perspective on Human-Feline Bonds
Rakesh Narayana, chief growth officer for Mars Pet Nutrition Europe, commented: "We know cat parents crave a deeper sense of connection with their cats, even if that means speaking their language or mimicking their behaviour. This campaign is grounded in our understanding of both cat and human behaviour, celebrating the distinctive bond."
Common Tactics Employed by Cat Owners
According to the research, these are the most common methods cat owners use to try to gain their pet's approval:
- Giving them treats
- Playing with them
- Buying them toys
- Giving them extra cuddles
- Letting them sleep on/in the bed
- Giving them space and letting them come to you
- Brushing or grooming them
- Talking to them in a soft or "baby" voice
- Doing 'slow blinks' at them
- Upgrading their food
The study underscores the ongoing negotiation between cats and their owners, revealing that while feline affection may be elusive, human dedication to earning it remains unwavering.
