Belgium has issued an urgent nationwide recall of several varieties of extremely spicy Korean instant noodles after health officials confirmed two women died shortly after consuming the products.
The Belgian food safety agency (FAVV) has ordered the immediate removal of Samyang Foods' popular 'Buldak' ramen from supermarket shelves across the country. The fiery noodles, known for their intense heat levels, are under investigation after being linked to the tragic deaths.
Tragic Incidents Prompt Immediate Action
Authorities revealed that a 14-year-old girl died in the city of Dilbeek after eating the spicy noodles, while a woman in her twenties passed away in Beringen following consumption of the same product. Both fatalities occurred within a short time of eating the ramen, raising serious concerns about potential health risks.
"We have immediately taken the necessary preventive measures," stated the FAVV in an official statement. "The products have been withdrawn from sale throughout Belgium as we await the results of our ongoing investigation."
Global Popularity Meets Safety Concerns
The 'Buldak' range, particularly the 'Hot Chicken Stew' flavour, has gained international fame through social media challenges where participants attempt to consume the intensely spicy noodles. However, medical experts are now warning about potential dangers.
While the exact cause of death remains under investigation, preliminary reports suggest the extreme spice levels may have triggered fatal reactions in individuals with underlying health conditions. The products contain capsaicin extracts that significantly increase their heat intensity beyond typical spicy foods.
Consumer Warning and International Response
Belgian authorities have advised consumers who have purchased these products not to eat them and to return them to points of sale. The recall affects multiple varieties of the Samyang Buldak line, known for their distinctive black packaging and fiery reputation.
Neighbouring countries including France, Germany, and the Netherlands are monitoring the situation closely, though no similar recalls have been announced outside Belgium at this time. The European Commission has been notified of the safety alert through the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.
Food safety experts emphasise that while spicy foods are generally safe for most people, individuals with specific health conditions should exercise caution with extremely hot products. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the precise relationship between the noodle consumption and the tragic outcomes.
