Keeping your washing machine clean is essential for fresh laundry and to prevent bacteria buildup. A cheap cleaner from Home Bargains does the job brilliantly, costing just £1.29.
The Importance of Cleaning Your Washing Machine
Appliances that clean for you still need regular attention. Washing machines can become breeding grounds for mould, limescale, dead skin cells, and bacteria. This grime can leave both the machine and clothes smelling unpleasant. Thorough disinfection is the only remedy.
Having previously tested Dettol and Dr Beckmann washing machine cleaners with impressive results, I was keen to find a cheaper alternative that could match or surpass them. A trip to my local Home Bargains led me to the Elbow Grease Washing Machine Cleaner in lemon fresh.
Product Claims and First Impressions
The product targets detergent build-up, grime, and limescale, promising to keep the machine smelling great and running at its best. It claims to be "perfect for maintaining a spotless wash every time." I was impressed by its ability to shift detergent residue and stains from the drawer, leaving a lingering fresh fragrance even after several washes.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
I focus on two areas: the drawer and the rubber door seal. I removed the drawer and submerged it in hot water with a quarter of the bottle of cleaner for about half an hour, then rinsed and wiped it down. Meanwhile, I applied some cleaner to a cloth and wiped the rubber seal and inner door. Mould in this area is a regular battle, so I never skip this step.
If your machine has an odour, the seal is likely the culprit. It can harbour foul smells, lint, bacteria, and dirt. After cleaning the drawer, I slotted it back in and poured the remaining solution into the largest compartment. I set the machine to run an empty hot wash at 60 degrees Celsius, the ideal temperature for killing bacteria.
While the cycle ran, I wiped down the exterior with the leftover solution. Once finished, I dried the rubber seal thoroughly with a microfibre cloth to remove moisture. To prevent odours and mould, I leave the door and drawer slightly ajar for at least 10 to 15 minutes after each use.
Time and Results
The entire process takes just under three hours, mostly waiting for the drawer to soak and the cycle to complete. The result is a fresh, clean machine with no lingering smells. The Elbow Grease cleaner performs excellently at a fraction of the cost of well-known brands.
