If your trusted foundation suddenly feels different or your favourite cleanser seems altered, you are not imagining things. Beauty companies are quietly reformulating some of their most iconic products, and this practice is occurring more frequently than many consumers realise.
Why Brands Update Their Formulas
In most instances, these formula updates represent positive developments. Brands adjust their formulations in response to customer feedback, aiming to enhance texture, wear time, or address sensitivity concerns. Other motivations include upgrading packaging or incorporating newer, more advanced ingredients.
Even legendary products are not exempt from this trend. Consider Clarins Double Serum, first introduced in 1985 and now in its ninth generation as of 2024. Reinvention appears essential for maintaining relevance in a competitive market.
Testing the Latest Reformulations
Below, we have rigorously tested the newest wave of reformulated products to identify what has actually changed and, more importantly, whether they merit your attention.
Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation
The beauty industry's most reliable foundation has received a contemporary refresh, and crucially, it continues to excel where it matters most. The new formula feels noticeably lighter on the skin, offering a more dimensional matte finish that avoids the flat, overly powdered appearance the original could sometimes exhibit.
Coverage remains firmly medium-to-full, but the skin-like quality now stands out. It smooths uneven tone and blurs pores without feeling mask-like, with seriously impressive wear time. We found it comfortably endured through long days and extended evenings without oxidising.
The addition of oil control and hydration provides a more balanced feel across different skin types, and the upgraded bottle is a subtle but welcome improvement. With 60 shades across multiple undertones, it also feels more inclusive than ever before.
Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Twenty-five years after its launch, this makeup artist favourite has evolved while thankfully retaining its signature glow. The reformulated version incorporates more skincare benefits, with glycerin and niacinamide working behind the scenes to improve skin tone and boost luminosity over time.
On application, it delivers everything you would hope for: silky, weightless, and effortlessly blendable. The finish remains that quintessential 'your skin but better' radiance, but it now lasts longer – up to 24 hours – with a fresh, hydrated feel that does not slip or separate.
We also observed a subtle plumping effect with continued wear, making this feel like more than just a cosmetic upgrade. The expanded 44-shade range further enhances its appeal.
Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil
Already a cult favourite, this reinvention emphasises what made it iconic: high shine, comfort, and that clever pH-reactive colour. However, it now does even more for your lips.
The addition of longer-lasting hydration – up to 24 hours – is immediately noticeable. Lips feel softer and smoother well beyond initial application. The new finishes – Juicy, Sparkly, and Glaze – introduce a playful, 'sugared lips' effect that feels contemporary without being excessive.
Cherry oil remains the star ingredient, delivering nourishment with a cushiony, non-sticky texture. It is still the gloss-oil hybrid we adore, just elevated.
Dr.Jart+ Cryo Rubber Moisturising Mask
These viral masks have received a practical and very welcome update. The most significant change is that treatment time has been halved from 40 minutes down to just 20, making them far more realistic to incorporate into your routine.
Performance has not been compromised. If anything, the addition of 2% peptides across all four variants – Moisturising, Soothing, Firming, and the new Brightening – makes them feel more results-driven. Skin appears plumper, calmer, and noticeably more refreshed after use.
They are now also suitable for sensitive skin, which considerably broadens their appeal. If you loved them previously but found them a bit of a commitment, this upgrade addresses that issue.
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream
Few moisturisers have achieved the icon status of Magic Cream, so a reformulation was always going to be bold. This new version feels like a genuine step forward.
Now powered by over 100 multi-action peptides and barrier-strengthening ectoin, it is noticeably more treatment-focused. Skin feels instantly hydrated and plumped, but with continued use, we observed improvements in texture, firmness, and overall glow.
Importantly, it has not lost that signature lit-from-within finish that makes it such a favourite under makeup. It still delivers that backstage, red carpet-ready radiance – just with added long-term benefits.
Erborian CC Crème
A staple since 2013, this hybrid product has been subtly upgraded rather than overhauled – exactly what fans will appreciate.
The texture and finish remain unchanged: lightweight, breathable, and naturally radiant. However, the skincare element has been enhanced, with 2% Centella Asiatica and hyaluronic acid delivering both instant and longer-term hydration, along with a soothing effect particularly noticeable on sensitised skin.
The SPF has been increased to 30, and the expanded shade range – now six – makes it more wearable across different skin tones. It remains your best 'no makeup makeup' ally, just with improved skin benefits.
Nivea Soft Moisturiser
A classic that has likely resided in your bathroom – or your mother's – for years, NIVEA Soft has undergone a quiet but meaningful reformulation focused on sustainability.
The new formula is now made with 95% naturally derived ingredients, including vegetable and almond oils, and is both vegan and 98% biodegradable. Importantly, it still feels reassuringly familiar: that same lightweight, fast-absorbing texture and instantly comforting hydration remain intact.
Behind the scenes, however, the changes are significant. Silicone oils, mineral oils, and non-biodegradable polymers have all been removed, resulting in a much lower environmental impact without compromising performance. This is a smart, future-facing update of a heritage product that demonstrates reformulation can be both responsible and respectful of what made the original so beloved.
Olaplex No.3 PLUS Complete Repair Treatment
A true icon in haircare, No.3 has long been the go-to for repairing damage at home, so this evolution into No.3 PLUS feels like a significant moment. Crucially, it delivers.
Still used as a pre-shampoo treatment, the new formula is designed to work in just three minutes – a welcome shift for anyone who has ever left the original on for far longer than instructed. Impressively, the speed does not compromise results. Powered by Olaplex's Bond Building Technology and a new Damage Defense Complex, it works deep within the hair to repair and strengthen from the inside out.
After testing, hair feels noticeably stronger and softer, with less breakage over time and a healthier overall finish. It offers that rare combination of instant gratification and long-term payoff – and for anyone trying to grow their hair, the support for length retention is a major advantage.
The Inkey List Oat Balm Cleanser
The new Oat Balm Cleanser is launching on 13th April. One of the most beloved affordable cleansers is receiving a thoughtful relaunch, and on paper, the improvements tick all the right boxes.
The oat kernel oil concentration has been increased for better barrier support and more effective makeup removal, while new emulsifiers promise a cleaner rinse without residue. The addition of sea buckthorn oil brings anti-inflammatory benefits, particularly appealing for breakout-prone skin.
Packaging has also been reworked to be more user-friendly and sustainable, significantly reducing plastic usage – a rare win-win situation.
We have not yet tested the new formula, but given the strength of the original, this appears to be a smart evolution rather than a risky reinvention.
