Cleaning an oven is often dreaded, but a simple baking soda paste can remove baked-on stains in about 30 minutes of actual work, without spending money on harsh chemical cleaners. Katherine McPhillips, who tested the method, found that baking soda, a common kitchen ingredient, effectively breaks down burnt grease and food residue.
Why Baking Soda Works
Ovens are hard to clean because grime turns into burnt residue that sticks to surfaces. Baking soda is mildly alkaline, which helps break down organic matter like proteins, fats, and oils. Its fine particles are gently abrasive, loosening stains without scratching the surface.
McPhillips first tried this method last December and found it made oven cleaning so much easier that she no longer dreads the chore. She also helped a friend clean an old oven that had grime sitting for years, proving the method’s effectiveness.
Step-by-Step Method
To use this method, you need a tub of baking soda, a few squirts of washing-up liquid, optional white vinegar, warm water, sponges, cloths, and an old mug. First, remove trays and racks, washing them in the sink or soaking if heavily stained.
Next, mix baking soda with a few drops of washing-up liquid in the mug, then add water gradually to form a thick paste. Spread the paste over dirty oven surfaces, avoiding the fan, heating element, and electrical components. Leave it overnight for 8 to 12 hours to soften grease.
Results and Impact
The next day, use a damp cloth to remove the paste, with white vinegar helping to dissolve residue. A non-scratch sponge can gently scrub away remaining marks. Finally, dry the oven and ensure trays are dry before replacing.
In practice, applying the paste took about 10 minutes, and cleaning the next day took about 20 minutes. The oven was left looking much cleaner without the need for harsh chemical cleaners, making this a low-effort, cost-effective alternative.
