In a major consumer safety alert, more than 4,000 bottles of gel nail polish remover sold via Amazon are being urgently recalled over serious cancer fears. The Chinese manufacturer Morovan issued the critical warning after laboratory tests detected the presence of two highly toxic substances: methylene chloride and chloroform. Both chemicals are strictly prohibited in cosmetic products under safety regulations.
Severe Health Risks Identified
Scientific studies have established alarming connections between these chemicals and severe health conditions. In animal testing, methylene chloride has been strongly associated with a significantly elevated risk of developing cancers in the breast, liver, lungs, brain, and blood. Chloroform, similarly, has been linked to cancer development and substantial organ damage. Furthermore, chloroform possesses dangerous neurotoxic properties capable of paralyzing nerves, which can lead to unconsciousness or, in extreme cases, fatal respiratory failure.
Product Identification and Sales Period
The recalled product is a gel nail polish remover contained in distinctive 0.5 fluid ounce (15 milliliter) square turquoise bottles fitted with a white cap. These bottles were sold within a green packaging box. The items were available for purchase on the Amazon marketplace between August 2025 and January of this year. Authorities note that, to date, no illnesses or injuries related to the use of this specific nail polish remover have been formally reported.
Immediate Consumer Action Required
Consumers are being urged to cease using the product immediately. The recommended disposal procedure involves clearly marking the item as recalled, placing it in regular household waste, photographing the product, and sending that image to Morovan to initiate the refund process. The manufacturer, which produced the bottles in China, is owned by the company Hong Kong Yiixin Trading Limited. The production batch was manufactured in February 2024 and carries an expiry date extending to February 2027.
Regulatory Context and Detection
The recall notice, published by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), states that 4,000 units are being recalled, though it does not specify the number of bottles constituting a single unit. The precise reason for the presence of these banned chemicals in the product remains unclear. However, methylene chloride and chloroform are known industrial solvents sometimes used to rapidly dissolve and lift nail polish. While the exact detection method was not detailed, officials routinely conduct safety tests on products sold within the United States.
Historical Bans on Toxic Chemicals
The regulatory history underscores the danger of these substances. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the manufacture, processing, and distribution of methylene chloride for consumer paint and coating removers in 2019. This prohibition was expanded in 2024 to include its use in automotive cleaners, adhesives, and degreasers. Chloroform was officially banned in the US back in 1976 following studies linking it to liver cancer and kidney tumors in laboratory animals. Historically, chloroform had been used for decades in products like cough syrups and certain toothpastes to mask unpleasant flavours and provide a cooling sensation.
Exposure Risks and Symptoms
Potential exposure to these hazardous chemicals can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or direct contact with the skin or eyes. Warning signs of exposure include skin irritation, redness, and indigestion. In cases of prolonged or significant contact, individuals may suffer from severe skin burns or lapse into unconsciousness, highlighting the critical importance of this urgent recall and proper disposal.
