Urgent Safety Alert for 85,000 UK Tumble Dryer Owners
Approximately 85,000 households across the United Kingdom are set to receive direct visits from manufacturers as part of a critical safety programme addressing fire hazards in specific tumble dryer models. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has mandated this remedial action following an urgent safety notice issued last year concerning heat pump tumble dryers manufactured by Haier.
Affected Brands and Immediate Actions Required
The appliances in question were sold under several well-known brands, including Baumatic, Candy, Caple, Hoover, Iberna, Lamona, and Montpellier. The OPSS has explicitly stated that the UK manufacturers have initiated a modification programme for all products within the scope of this safety issue.
Consumers are urged to immediately check if their model is affected via the official manufacturer links. Should a tumble dryer match one of the listed models, owners must disconnect it from the mains power supply and refrain from using it entirely until the necessary repair work has been completed by a professional technician.
The Scale of the Problem and Broader Fire Risks
With around 16 million households in the UK owning a tumble dryer, making it one of the most ubiquitous domestic appliances, safety experts have long warned about its potential hazards. Official UK Government fire data reveals that tumble dryers are responsible for 884 fires annually across the country, equating to more than 16 incidents every single week.
Analysis by Electrical Safety First of Home Office figures suggests that white goods, including tumble dryers, are linked to at least three accidental fires each day in England alone. In Wales, tumble dryers accounted for a staggering 57 percent of all appliance fires recorded over the past three years, cementing their status as the single biggest household appliance fire risk.
Emerging Dangers: The Vape Connection
A modern trend is exacerbating these risks further. Experts from Ecigone have issued a new warning highlighting a lesser-known hazard that could be increasing fire dangers in UK homes. With approximately 5.5 million adults in the UK using vape devices, most of which are carried on the person throughout the day, there is a growing risk of these devices being accidentally left in clothing before it is placed into a tumble dryer.
This risk has intensified following the UK ban on single-use disposable vapes in June 2025, which has pushed users towards rechargeable pod systems. These devices are often smaller and more easily forgotten in pockets. The team at Ecigone warns that the combination of widespread usage and compact device size means many households may be unknowingly introducing lithium-ion batteries into tumble dryers, creating a significant fire hazard.
This concern is not merely theoretical. Freedom of Information data from 39 fire and rescue services shows that vape-related fires have surged by 348 percent across the UK in just four years, rising from 89 incidents in 2020 to 399 in 2024.
What Owners Must Do Now
The OPSS is urging all potentially affected members of the public, including those who are uncertain whether they are impacted, to check the model lists and contact their manufacturer directly to be added to the modification programme. The companies involved will visit every home containing an affected tumble dryer to perform the necessary safety modifications.
Owners are reminded that safety must come first: disconnect any affected appliance immediately and await professional intervention.
