80% of Gen Z pick chocolate as top tea-dunking snack

A survey by Tony's Chocolonely and Yorkshire Tea has found that 80% of 18-24-year-olds consider chocolate their top tea-dunking snack. The research also shows that 66% of this age group already dip chocolate bars into their tea.

Structure and Dunking Habits

The study highlights that structure matters to dunkers, with 81% agreeing it is very important that a snack holds together when dipped. It also found that 87% of British tea drinkers have lost a biscuit or snack to the bottom of their cup, a problem chocolate reportedly solves as it softens while keeping its shape.

The Science Behind the Pairing

Dr Lorenzo Stafford, Associate Professor of Psychobiology, explained why tea and chocolate work well together. Chocolate contains naturally occurring compounds such as phenylethylamine (PEA) and theobromine, which are linked to elevated mood and alertness. Tea contains flavonoids associated with relaxation and stress reduction, creating a balance of gentle uplift and calm. Chocolate's sweetness also complements tea's mild bitterness, while the warmth of a freshly brewed cup enhances chocolate's melting texture.

Dr Stafford said: "It is fascinating to see how much thought Brits put into what makes a great dunk. Flavour, texture and temperature all shape how we experience food and the combination of hot tea with melting chocolate creates a particularly enjoyable sensory experience. When it comes to dunking, tea and chocolate have great chemistry so it's no surprise young people have embraced it."

Chef Endorsement and Promotions

TV chef Sam Holland, a Yorkshire Tea fan, has declared himself a 'melt' and encourages others to try the pairing. He said: "As a chef, I'm always looking for food combinations that just work and chocolate in a proper cup of tea is one of the simplest. I've always been a Yorkshire Tea drinker and if dunking my chocolate in there makes me a melt, I'm happy with that."

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Tea and Tony's Chocolonely said: "Brits love their tea and their chocolate and now the science shows why. This National Chocolate Week, we're inviting everyone to give it a go to embrace their inner 'melt' and discover just how well chunky chocolate and a proper brew can work together."

National Chocolate Week Events

During National Chocolate Week, from Monday, October 19, to Friday, October 23, people who declare 'I'm a melt' at Terry's Cafe in London, Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds, and Gran T's in Greater Manchester will receive a free mug of Yorkshire Tea and a Tony's Chocolonely bar while stocks last. The first 100 customers at each venue will also get a limited-edition 'melt' cap.
