Lottery operator Allwyn has revealed that 1,542,081 National Lottery players have unclaimed winnings sitting in their online accounts, with the average prize amounting to just £3.90. Despite the modest average, the total unspent sum represents millions of pounds, and some accounts contain multiple wins, with over 195,000 players holding prizes of £10 or more. Individual wins can reach up to £500, the maximum amount automatically credited to an online account.
Allwyn Urges Players to Check Accounts
Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor at Allwyn, encouraged players to log in and claim their funds. “Come on, you’ve played a game, become a winner and yet not enjoyed your win,” he said. “It’s time to log on and check - it could be you. I love making winners and it always amazes me that some players seem happy to wait to enjoy their win.” Carter noted that even small amounts could be used for a treat, savings, or to purchase more tickets, potentially leading to larger prizes. “With Lotto making double the number of millionaires this win in your account could turn into a chance to win a million in just a couple of clicks,” he added.
Regional Breakdown of Unclaimed Wins
The unclaimed prizes are spread across the UK. In Scotland, 130,375 players have yet to withdraw winnings, while Wales has 74,444 and Northern Ireland 27,767. In England, London leads with 200,553 unclaimed accounts, followed by the South East with 192,680, the East of England with 186,683, and the North West with 180,672. Other regions include Yorkshire (128,824), the West Midlands (121,141), the South West including Bristol (134,229), the East Midlands (95,474), and the North East (66,662).
From Small Wins to Millionaire Status
Paul Wynne, a father of eight from north Wales, knows how a small win can change lives. He won £1 million on Lotto after initially thinking he had won £1,700. “One of the lines are dates associated with my five younger children, and that’s the line that made me a millionaire,” he said. “It took a while to work out what was going on, to compute it.”
National Lottery's Impact on Good Causes
Since the National Lottery began in 1994, over £53 billion has been raised for good causes, supporting more than 680,000 projects across the UK. This equates to approximately £33 million every week. Allwyn’s reminder serves as a prompt for players to check their accounts and potentially contribute to future funding by reclaiming their winnings.
