Nationwide has announced a major initiative to install defibrillators and bleed control kits outside all 605 of its UK branches, with Virgin Money branches set to follow. The building society described the move as the largest combined roll-out of its kind, aiming to transform branches into emergency hubs accessible to the public.
Alongside the equipment installation, Nationwide will offer free life-saving training sessions on CPR and how to use the devices for local communities. The training will first be provided to branch colleagues before being extended to the public, with the goal of boosting confidence in handling emergencies.
The initiative builds on existing community support, including dementia clinics at over 250 Nationwide and Virgin Money branches, and Safe Spaces for domestic abuse victims. Nationwide became the high street's largest banking provider on 4 June, with a total of 696 branches, while rival banks continue with closures.
Amanda Beech, Nationwide's Director of Retail Services, said the bank's unique reach allows it to place life-saving equipment in trusted community locations. St John Ambulance Chief Medical Officer Professor Andrew Hartle praised the partnership, stating it will save lives by increasing access to defibrillators and bleed control kits.
The kits will be accessible round the clock, except when located within shopping centres, and can be used as directed by 999 emergency services.
