Newcastle-based train operator Lumo has achieved a double success, securing top marks for value for money and recording the largest increase in passenger numbers across the UK rail industry.
Value for Money Recognition
Lumo, headquartered in Newcastle, operates long-distance services linking London King's Cross, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. The company was awarded first place in the 'value for money' category in a Transport Focus survey of over 100,000 rail passengers. Transport Focus, the independent watchdog, stated: 'Lumo passengers were most satisfied with value for money (75%).'
Passenger Growth
According to official statistics released this week, Lumo saw a 23% increase in passenger numbers compared to the previous year, the highest growth in the entire UK rail industry. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) reported a 4% increase in passenger numbers on UK railways for the first quarter of 2026, while Lumo outstripped all rivals with a 23% rise, from 0.3 million to 0.4 million journeys.
Satisfaction Ratings
Lumo ranked joint fourth overall with a satisfaction rating of 90% in the largest rail satisfaction survey to date. Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, commented: 'For Lumo to be ranked number one for value for money, while also placed among the top three long-distance operators for overall satisfaction, reflects our commitment to making rail more accessible and affordable.'
New Service Launch
Last month, Lumo launched a new service linking Stirling and London Euston via the West Coast Main Line, providing the first direct link to London for several stations along the route. On the East Coast, Lumo experienced 23% growth, nearly eight times the general increase in long-distance train travel, according to the ORR.
Open Access Operations
Lumo and Hull Trains are both 'open access' operators, running without taxpayer subsidy. Lumo is one of only two operators to record a double-digit increase in passenger numbers. The Transport Focus survey runs continuously, allowing passenger views to inform real-time improvements and long-term decision-making.
Alex Robertson, Chief Executive of Transport Focus, said: 'These results show that it's possible for the railway to get it right, but that this isn't happening consistently enough. The gap between the worst and best performing operators is striking.'
As local heroes Lumo continue their upward trend, hopes are high that more people will visit the North East for less in the years to come.
