Leigh Spinners Mill, home to more than 100 businesses and an independent cinema, is open as usual after a historic manufacturing firm sharing its name went into administration. Manufacturing company Leigh Spinners Ltd, which operated from the ground floor of the mill, is now being managed by joint administrators from BDO LLP after entering liquidation.
Historic firm's legacy
Founded in 1913 by John Horrocks as a cotton spinning mill, Leigh Spinners later became a manufacturer of non-turf grass, sports surfaces and heavy duty floor coverings. The firm has been family owned for more than a century and has long been a cornerstone of the Leigh economy.
It is based in the double mill building, described as the finest late era mill in the country. The upper floors of the historic mill are now devoted to retail and leisure, also known as Leigh Spinners Mill.
Mill management reassures visitors
In a statement, the mill’s management said: “We would like to reassure all visitors, customers and tenants that Leigh Spinners Mill and all businesses operating within the mill remain open and unaffected based on recent news.
“We encourage everyone to continue visiting and supporting the fantastic range of independent businesses that call Leigh Spinners Mill home. Your continued support means a great deal to our community.
“We are also looking forward to welcoming you all to our Halloween Spectacular Open Day on Saturday, October 31. Join us for a fantastic day celebrating the mill, its businesses and the wonderful community that surrounds it.”
MP responds to liquidation
MP Jo Platt said she was ‘extremely saddened’ to hear that Leigh Spinners Ltd has entered liquidation. She said: “Leigh Spinners Ltd has made a significant contribution to our town over many decades and that continued contribution will be greatly missed.
“It is important to be clear, however, that Leigh Spinners Mill, on the upper floors, remains open and is unaffected by this news. The mill continues to be home to more than 100 independent businesses, all of which are continuing to trade and operate as usual.
“Leigh Spinners Mill remains a busy and vibrant community asset and an important part of our town’s heritage. I would encourage everyone to continue supporting the fantastic local businesses based at the mill.”
Leigh Spinners Mill is owned and managed by Leigh Building Preservation Trust.
