HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning to UK parents with multiple children, highlighting that they could be losing out on up to £930 annually per additional child. In a recent update on X (formerly Twitter), HMRC reminded parents that Child Benefit is available for each child, and many may not be claiming what they are entitled to.
What is Child Benefit?
Child Benefit is a tax-free state payment designed to help parents or guardians with the costs of raising a child. Payments are made every four weeks. For the eldest child, the benefit is worth approximately £1,406 per year. For each subsequent child, the annual amount is just over £930. There is no limit on the number of children a parent can claim for, though only one person can claim per child if two people are caring for the same child.
HMRC Message Details
The HMRC message states: "Have more than one child? Claim Child Benefit now and you could receive: £27.05/week for your eldest child; £17.90/week for each additional child. You'll also get National Insurance credits to protect your State Pension – even if you're not currently working. Claim via the HMRC app or online now."
High Income Child Benefit Charge
Higher earners should be aware of the High Income Child Benefit Charge. If you or your partner earn over £60,000, you must repay 1% of your Child Benefit for every £200 earned above this threshold. Those earning over £80,000 must repay the entire amount received. The income threshold was raised from £50,000 to £60,000 in April 2024.
