Tottenham Make Move for Man United's Marcus Rashford, Reject £40m Clause
Tottenham Move for Rashford, Reject £40m Clause

Tottenham Hotspur have identified Marcus Rashford as a transfer target following his return to Manchester United after Barcelona opted not to make his loan permanent. The England forward impressed during the World Cup but faces an uncertain club future.

Tottenham's Stance on £40m Clause

According to the i Paper, Tottenham are unwilling to meet the £40 million release clause in Rashford's United contract, which Aston Villa would have needed to trigger had they signed him permanently during his 2024-25 loan spell. Instead, Spurs are considering a reduced bid for the 28-year-old.

Tottenham have already strengthened their squad with Andrew Robertson, Marco Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke, but are prioritizing Premier League-proven talent after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, managing just 48 goals in 38 league fixtures.

Rashford's Preference for Overseas Move

Despite Tottenham's interest, reports suggest Rashford would favor a move abroad. Bayern Munich have been linked, while Aston Villa remain in contention following his loan spell between January and June 2025. Barcelona have expressed willingness to take him on loan again, but United are believed to oppose another temporary departure.

During his stint at Barcelona, Rashford registered 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. His relationship with United turned sour after falling out with former manager Ruben Amorim, who sent him on loan and then excluded him from the first team. Current boss Michael Carrick has not resolved the situation, and pundit Alan Shearer urged Carrick not to reintegrate Rashford.

De Zerbi's Admiration

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is a known admirer of Rashford's direct running and attacking intent, which would suit his high-intensity approach. Spurs are attempting to complete their transfer business swiftly as they reshape the squad for the upcoming season.

Shearer commented on Rashford's situation: "I don't think it will be difficult for Rashford to focus on his game at the World Cup because ultimately he has a contract at Man United, albeit they don't want him and he doesn't want to be there... Things will get sorted. I think both may be playing a game."
