Tokyo Newcastle Closes, Sold for £1.1m

Tokyo, a landmark Newcastle city centre bar, has shut its doors for good after a final party on Saturday, October 17, 2025. The venue, which had operated on Westgate Road since 2004, was sold for £1.1m to the Hymus Group, which also owns The Dubliner on the Quayside and Dirty Murphy's on Grainger Street.

A Final Celebration on the Roof Terrace

The bar went out with 'one last dance' over the weekend, hosting a terrace party that drew patrons from the afternoon into the early hours. The closure was announced earlier in the month via a social media statement, which confirmed October 17 as the last day of trading.

The statement read: 'Thanks to all the staff, DJs, security, promoters and of course you guys, for making it happen over all these years.'

End of an Era for Newcastle Nightlife

Tokyo had been a staple of the city's nightlife scene since opening in 2004, known for cocktails and its roof terrace. Its closure comes amid a challenging period for the North East hospitality industry, with several other bars and restaurants having closed or rebranded over the past year.

While Tokyo is no more, the building is set to be repurposed under its new ownership. The Hymus Group recently opened Dirty Murphy's in the former home of The Mushroom on Grainger Street.
