Swansea City have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign winger Elijah Just from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, facing competition from Celtic and others. The 26-year-old New Zealand international scored three goals at the recent World Cup, becoming his country's all-time leading scorer in the tournament.
World Cup Hero Attracts Interest
Just scored a brace against Iran in New Zealand's opening game and added another goal in the group stage, catching the eye of clubs across Europe. According to the Daily Record, Swansea have declared their interest to the player and his representatives in the past 48 hours.
Swansea manager Vitor Matos views Just as a top summer priority and is keen to secure a quick deal amid significant interest. Celtic and French side Toulouse are also believed to be monitoring the winger.
Contract Situation and Transfer Fee
Just is entering the final year of his contract at Fir Park, but Motherwell hold an option to extend it by a further 12 months. The Daily Record reports that a significant seven-figure bid will be required to convince Motherwell to sell.
Just joined Motherwell from Danish side Horsens last summer and was a standout performer, scoring seven goals and registering eight assists in the Scottish Premiership. His performances helped Motherwell finish fourth and qualify for Europe, earning him a nomination for the player of the year award.
Swansea's Recent Moves and Setbacks
Swansea have already signed one of Just's former teammates, defender Stephen Welsh, who played for Motherwell last season on loan from Celtic. Welsh joined Swansea on a two-year deal last month after terminating his Celtic contract.
However, Matos has suffered two major blows to his preparations for the upcoming Championship season. Star player Ethan Galbraith moved to Stoke City, and midfielder Goncalo Franco faces three months out after ankle ligament surgery. Franco was injured in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Exeter City. The club confirmed he will miss the start of the season, which begins on August 14.
