Sunderland Explores Stadium of Light Expansion to 49,000

Sunderland AFC is weighing a major expansion of its Stadium of Light, which currently holds 49,000 spectators. The club, which returned to the Premier League last season and finished seventh, has seen record ticket demand and a waiting list of 15,000 for season tickets.

Record Demand and Revenue Pressures

Chief executive Tom Burwell revealed internal discussions about increasing capacity and improving facilities. Speaking to City AM, Burwell said: "We have 15,000 people on a waiting list [for season tickets], we have 54 boxes here and I have 45 boxes on the waiting list." The club also needs to raise revenue to comply with Premier League spending rules, which limit on-pitch spending to 85% of revenue, or 70% for clubs in European competition.

Burwell acknowledged the financial opportunity: "There’s revenue at the moment that’s in the middle of that table I’m not at this moment in time bringing [forward]. We have a great relationship with the council so there are opportunities and plans where we could explore building and improving our stadium." However, he questioned whether expansion is the best use of funds: "The question I have back – and I’ve discussed at length internally – is whether that is the best way of spending money."

Stadium as a Year-Round Venue

The Stadium of Light, built in 1996, is one of English football's largest grounds outside the traditional "Big Six." Burwell envisions transforming it into a 365-day-a-year sports and entertainment facility. The stadium recently hosted Take That on June 9, attracting thousands. "We are a stadium adjacent to the city connected by a brand new footbridge, and with that, what does that mean we can be? A 365-day-a-year sports and entertainment facility," he said.

To boost revenue without costly construction, the club is exploring premium hospitality. Burwell highlighted "Banks on the Wear," a two-Michelin-star restaurant run by chef Tommy Banks, which is sold out for the new season. "Who would have thought a year ago that’s what Sunderland AFC would have within their premium inventory? Yet we are completely sold out for the new season," he added.

Sustainable Growth and European Ambitions

An expansion would be sustainable only if Sunderland establishes itself as a regular in European competitions. The club's Europa League qualification this season has already increased demand. Burwell's comments come as the club balances on-field investment with stadium development, aiming to maximise revenue streams while maintaining financial discipline.
