Marcus Rashford's £40 million release clause has now expired as he prepares to return to Manchester United, with the forward completing his World Cup duties for England. The 28-year-old featured throughout the tournament, where the Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Argentina in the semi-finals earlier this week.
Loan at Barcelona and Impact
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona and made a strong impression, producing 14 goals and 14 assists across 47 appearances in all competitions. His form helped secure both the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. Barcelona held a £26m option to make the move permanent, and while Rashford was open to staying, the Catalan club allowed the clause to lapse on June 15. They instead moved for Anthony Gordon, completing an €80m (£69m) deal for the Newcastle United winger.
Uncertain Future and Potential Suitors
Rashford's situation has remained uncertain in recent weeks, with Fenerbahce briefly surfacing as a potential destination for the attacker. Nevertheless, he has no desire to relocate to Turkey and is believed to favour remaining within Europe's elite divisions. At present, he is anticipated to return to Manchester for pre-season training, which could commence around August 10, with Michael Carrick eager to collaborate with him once more.
A departure hasn't been dismissed, but any prospective suitor will now need to negotiate a new fee following the expiry of his £40m release clause on July 15, according to The Athletic. That said, the clause was never accessible to United's two principal domestic competitors - Manchester City and Liverpool. Tottenham, Arsenal, Napoli and Chelsea are among the European sides to have registered interest in the forward this summer.
Rashford's Career and Current Status
Rashford is understood to have 'already turned down more lucrative' offers from other quarters. The Reds academy product fell out of favour under then-manager Ruben Amorim and was loaned to Aston Villa in February last year. Despite netting the opening goal of Amorim's reign in November 2024 and finding the net three times across six appearances in total, the 28-year-old quickly dropped down the hierarchy.
He displayed promising signs during his time at Villa before transferring to Barcelona last summer, where he continued his resurgence. At the World Cup, Rashford featured from the start in two of England's seven fixtures at this summer's tournament and was brought on deep into added time against Argentina, moments after Lautaro Martinez had given the holders the lead in the 92nd minute.
He concluded the competition with one goal - England's fourth in their group-stage curtain-raiser against Croatia. Conjecture surrounding his future is expected to persist as he prepares to return to Carrington for pre-season. Rashford had been hoping to have a transfer finalised before the World Cup, but was instead left in limbo.
"I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup, I wanted it (a move) done before," he said. "If it's not, I wanted it to wait until after. I want to be fully present in the moment."
The Manchester-born star progressed through United's youth system and has racked up over 400 senior outings for his boyhood side, netting 138 goals since making his debut in February 2016. He hasn't featured for United since December 2024.
