Rashford's £40m release clause expires before United return

Marcus Rashford's £40 million release clause has now expired ahead of his return to Manchester United as the forward wraps up his World Cup duties with England. The 28‑year‑old had been part of the Three Lions squad at the World Cup, where England ultimately fell to a 2-1 semi‑final defeat against Argentina earlier this week.

Loan spell at Barcelona

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona and made a strong impression, finishing with 14 goals and 14 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. His form helped deliver both the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.

Barcelona held a £26 million option to make the deal permanent, and Rashford was open to staying, but the Catalan club ultimately allowed the clause to expire on June 15. Instead, they moved for Anthony Gordon, signing the Newcastle United winger for €80 million (£69 million).

Future uncertainty

Rashford's future has remained unclear in recent weeks, with Fenerbahce briefly emerging as a possible landing spot for the forward. However, he has no intention of moving to Turkey and is understood to prefer staying within Europe's top leagues. For now, he is expected to report back to Manchester for pre‑season, which could be around August 10, with Michael Carrick keen to work with him again.

An exit hasn't been ruled out, but any interested club will now have to negotiate a fresh fee after his £40 million release clause expired on July 15, according to The Athletic. The clause was never available to United's two biggest domestic rivals - Manchester City and Liverpool. Tottenham, Arsenal, Napoli and Chelsea are among the European clubs to have shown interest in the Manchester United forward this summer. Rashford is believed to have 'already turned down more lucrative' proposals elsewhere.

Previous loan and World Cup

The Reds' academy graduate fell out of favour under then‑manager Ruben Amorim and was loaned to Aston Villa in February last year. Despite scoring the first goal of Amorim's tenure in November 2024 and netting three times in six matches overall, the 28‑year‑old soon slipped down the pecking order. He showed encouraging flashes during his spell at Villa before moving to Barcelona last summer, where he continued to rebuild momentum.

At the World Cup, Rashford started two of England's seven matches and was introduced deep into stoppage time against Argentina, moments after Lautaro Martinez had put the holders ahead in the 92nd minute. He finished the tournament with one goal - England's fourth in their group‑stage opener against Croatia.

Rashford's comments

Speculation around his future is set to rumble on as he prepares to head back to Carrington for pre‑season. Rashford had hoped to have a move resolved before the World Cup, but instead was left waiting. "I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup, I wanted it (a move) done before," he said. "If it's not, I wanted it to wait until after. I want to be fully present in the moment."

The Manchester‑born star came through United's academy and has made more than 400 senior appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 138 goals since his debut in February 2016. He hasn't played for United since December 2024.
