Piers Corbyn, the 79-year-old brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, has announced his candidacy for the Clacton-on-Sea by-election, setting up a direct challenge to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The anti-vaccine campaigner, who served as a Labour councillor in Southwark from 1986 to 1990, has faced controversy over his views, including a 2020 conviction for breaching coronavirus restrictions at an anti-lockdown gathering.
Farage's Resignation Triggers By-Election
The by-election follows Nigel Farage's resignation as MP on July 7, after intense scrutiny over financial support from convicted fraudster George Cottrell and a £5 million gift from a Reform UK donor. Labour called for an Electoral Commission investigation into whether the support should have been declared, given Farage's prominence in Reform before returning to frontline politics.
Corbyn's Campaign Platform
On his website, Piers Corbyn states that Clacton residents "deserve a representative who answers to them — not to lobbyists, party whips, or unaccountable global institutions." In a video recorded in Parliament Square, he called for a General Election, criticizing "failed Prime Minister" Sir Keir Starmer and his successor Andy Burnham. Corbyn argued the by-election is the "nearest thing to a General Election" and an opportunity to raise issues "we couldn’t otherwise raise."
He declared he is standing to win and bring "real change," adding, "Nigel Farage is not what he says on the tin." Corbyn outlined key policies: ending support for wars, calling the government "complicit in genocide" and accusing Farage of going along with it; ending "net zero nonsense and the climate con"; scrapping vaccines, claiming they "have been killing people and making them ill"; and opposing digital IDs, which he described as "all about surveillance and control."
Message of Accountability
Corbyn emphasized accountability as his main message, saying, "I can bring that. I will bring that." He claimed attacks on British citizens' rights originate from the World Economic Forum, urging people to "resist, defy, do not comply."
By-Election Date
The Clacton by-election could take place on August 13, after Reform UK chairman Lee Anderson formally moved the writ on Thursday morning. The party proposed August 6, but Tendring District Council has yet to confirm the date or publish the notice of election.
