Newcastle United's Free Agent History

Newcastle United have had a mixed transfer window so far, with key players like Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali departing, while spending £83 million on new signings such as Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Touré and Sean Steur. Eddie Howe's side finished 12th in the Premier League last season and impressed in the Champions League but failed to win silverware. To ease financial pressure, the club may turn to the free agency market, as they have done successfully in the past.

John Barnes: From Liverpool Legend to Magpie

John Barnes, best known for his 117 appearances at Liverpool with 107 goals and 92 assists, joined Newcastle on a free transfer in 1997 at age 33. Signed by former teammate and manager Sir Kenny Dalglish, Barnes was deployed as a second striker to Alan Shearer. He made 41 appearances over two seasons, scoring seven goals and providing one assist. Barnes earned 79 caps for England and played in two World Cups and one European Championship. He moved to Charlton Athletic on a free in 1999 and retired with 696 appearances, 178 goals, 103 assists, two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a League Cup.

Ian Rush: Anfield Icon's Brief Stint

Ian Rush, who scored 339 goals and provided 110 assists in two stints at Liverpool, joined Newcastle on a free in the same summer as Barnes. The Welsh striker made only 14 appearances for the Magpies, scoring twice and assisting once. Despite limited game time due to Shearer's return from injury, Rush helped Newcastle reach their first FA Cup final in 24 years, scoring a crucial goal against Everton in the semi-final. He won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, four League Cups and two European Cups with Liverpool.

The defensive midfielder said: "To be able to come to my hometown team is a special move... I'm going to be immensely proud to pull on the black and white shirt." Colback made 102 appearances for Newcastle, scoring five goals and providing ten assists, compared to 135 appearances and 11 goal contributions for Sunderland. He later played for Nottingham Forest, Queens Park Rangers and eighth-tier side Anstey Nomads before retiring at age 36 with 490 career appearances and 56 goal contributions.
