Newcastle United have confirmed that 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur will join the first-team squad for pre-season training on July 13, dismissing fears that he would be loaned out like recent teenage signings. The Dutch youngster arrives from Ajax in a deal worth up to £23 million, with a £20 million upfront payment and £3 million in add-ons.
First-Team Role Confirmed
According to Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson, Steur is considered a first-team squad player under manager Eddie Howe. The creative midfielder is not viewed as a replacement for Sandro Tonali, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week in a £100 million transfer. Instead, Steur is seen as a high-potential development prospect.
Newcastle scouts monitored Steur extensively during the 2025/26 season, where he became a regular for Ajax in the second half of the campaign. Notably, he scored the opening goal in a 1-1 draw against Feyenoord, demonstrating his ability to perform in high-pressure matches.
Transfer Details and Competition
Wilson personally travelled to the Netherlands to finalise the agreement, beating off interest from several Premier League and European clubs. The deal includes a 12% sell-on clause, ensuring Ajax benefit from any future transfer of the player. Steur arrived on Tyneside via private jet on the evening of July 7 and is completing formalities at the club's training ground and St James' Park.
Steur becomes Newcastle's third summer signing. The club is now expected to intensify efforts to sign Swiss international Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg, though competition for the young midfielder remains fierce.
Pre-Season Schedule
Newcastle will travel to La Manga at the end of July for an eight-day training camp, culminating in a friendly against Valencia at the Mestalla. Before that, Steur is expected to feature in closed-door friendlies against Darlington, as well as public fixtures at Gateshead and Bristol City, giving fans their first glimpse of the new signing.
