Manchester United completed three transfers in a week, signing midfielders Andrey Santos for £50 million and Youri Tielemans for £35 million. The combined £85 million outlay matches exactly what Tottenham Hotspur paid West Ham for Mateus Fernandes, a player United had targeted but refused to meet the asking price.
Recruitment Strategy Shift
After missing out on Elliot Anderson earlier in the window, United turned to Fernandes but were unwilling to meet West Ham's £85 million up-front valuation or match Tottenham's offer of £250,000 per week in wages. Club insiders say the new decision-makers stayed calm, unlike the previous regime that splurged on Casemiro after failing to sign Frenkie de Jong.
"There is now a belief at Old Trafford that value can be found in the transfer market if you look hard enough," the report states. Signing Santos and Tielemans for the same price as Fernandes is viewed as vindication of that approach.
Player Profiles
Santos, 21, is not the finished article but has potential. Fernandes, also young, has back-to-back Premier League relegations on his CV. Tielemans, 29, brings extensive experience, having been one of the league's most consistent midfielders over seven-and-a-half years. Aston Villa were desperate to keep him.
"Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League," said technical director Jason Wilcox after Tielemans' arrival. "He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at United." Wilcox also highlighted Tielemans' leadership, noting he was named Belgium captain last year.
Context and Impact
The transfers come after the sacking of manager Ruben Amorim, who had the worst win ratio, worst goals conceded per game ratio, and lowest clean sheet ratio of any United manager in Premier League history. The board faced criticism for hiring Amorim but are now being praised for improved recruitment.
United's new regime has lowered the wage bill and avoided overpaying. Tielemans' dynamic passing and ability to knit play together are expected to be assets for new manager Michael Carrick. Casemiro's departure left a leadership void that Tielemans can help fill.
Further signings are needed, including a high-quality third midfielder, but the deals for Santos and Tielemans suggest United can have another productive summer window.
