Manchester United are set to earn between £5 million and £6 million from Mason Greenwood's imminent departure from Marseille, triggered by a significant sell-on clause in his contract. The 24-year-old striker, who left Old Trafford for Marseille in 2024 for £26.6 million, has impressed with 48 goals in 76 appearances across all competitions. However, Marseille must sell players this summer due to financial constraints, and Greenwood is expected to move on.
Fenerbahce Leading the Race
Fenerbahce are the frontrunners for Greenwood's signature, with reports suggesting a deal is close. The Turkish club believe they can secure the transfer for around €45 million (£38.36 million), and personal terms with the player have already been agreed. L'Equipe reported on Thursday that Atletico Madrid remain in contention, while Roma have also shown interest but now appear to be out of the race. RMC Sport claims a four-year deal has been struck to take Greenwood to Istanbul.
Financial Details of the Sell-On Clause
Manchester United's sell-on clause was described as 'significant' when Greenwood left, and it is believed to be around 50% of the profit on his next permanent move. With Marseille expected to make a profit of £10-12 million on the sale, United will receive £5-6 million. While this provides a modest boost to the club's transfer funds, it is not expected to significantly alter their summer plans, which have faced frustrations in landing midfield targets.
United's Transfer Activity
Manchester United have missed out on several midfield targets, including Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham, while Aurelien Tchouameni signed a new contract at Real Madrid. However, deals have been agreed for Ederson from Atalanta and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, the latter for an initial £48 million plus £2 million in add-ons. Despite these additions, some fans may be disappointed by the profile of signings as the club returns to the Champions League.
