Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year contract, a move that contradicts previous criticisms by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe regarding the club's recruitment strategy for older players. The Belgian midfielder, 29, joined for a fee of £35 million and will remain at Old Trafford until age 34.
Tielemans Arrives After Impressive Villa Season
Tielemans arrives off the back of a strong campaign at Aston Villa, where he scored in the Europa League final in May. He is expected to compete for a regular midfield role at United, following the departure of Casemiro at the end of his contract. Casemiro's four-year spell at the club was marked by an initial strong impact, a subsequent decline, and a late resurgence.
Ratcliffe's Previous Criticism of Casemiro Deal
In March 2023, Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly questioned United's transfer policy during a presentation by the club's hierarchy, specifically citing the signing of Casemiro as an example of poor recruitment. The Brazilian was then 30 and signed on a four-year contract worth approximately £350,000 per week. Ratcliffe, the Ineos billionaire, raised concerns about pursuing a midfielder of that age with such a long and expensive deal.
While Tielemans' wages are not believed to be as high as Casemiro's, the five-year contract length mirrors the previous deal, keeping the player until the same age Casemiro was when he left. This has raised eyebrows given Ratcliffe's earlier stance.
Recruitment Strategy Shift?
The signing of Tielemans aligns with United's recent recruitment strategy of targeting players proven in the Premier League. Last season, the club successfully integrated Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who had previously impressed in England's top flight. Tielemans fits this profile, as does Andrey Santos, who recently joined from Chelsea after a loan spell at Nottingham Forest. This approach reduces the need for an adaptation period, as players are already accustomed to the demands of English football.
