Manchester United are stepping up their summer transfer activity and have identified Borussia Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson as a target following his impressive displays for Norway at the World Cup. The 28-year-old has been instrumental in Norway's run to the quarter-finals, where they will face England, and his form has reignited United's interest.
Ryerson's Value and Dortmund's Stance
Ryerson, who provided 15 assists last season, is valued at around €30 million (£25.6 million) by Dortmund. According to German outlet Bild, the Bundesliga club would consider selling him if they receive an offer in that region, despite their desire to keep him and open contract talks. His pace and strength in one-on-one situations are seen as ideal for the Premier League, and United view him as a solution to bolster their full-back options.
United's Transfer Priorities
Midfield remains United's top priority this summer, but the club also aims to strengthen in attack and at full-back if the budget allows. Manager Michael Carrick currently relies on Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw as regulars, but additional quality and depth are sought. Ryerson fits the bill as a versatile defender who can operate on both flanks.
United have a history of dealing with Dortmund, having signed Jadon Sancho in 2021 and later loaning him back to Germany in 2024. Dortmund have proven themselves willing to sell for the right price.
Midfield Targets and Recent Moves
The immediate focus at Old Trafford is improving midfield, an area identified as needing reinforcement even before Casemiro left upon contract expiry. United have seen several targets move elsewhere after opting out of big-money deals. They chose not to challenge Manchester City for Elliot Anderson (£116m) or Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham for an initial £92.5m.
However, United have agreed a deal for Brazilian Ederson, who impressed at Atalanta and featured at the World Cup. Other midfield targets include Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba.
