Manchester United have made contact with Borussia Dortmund and Norway wing-back Julian Ryerson over a potential transfer this summer, according to German outlet Bild. The 28-year-old right-back has been a key figure for Dortmund since joining from Union Berlin in January 2023 for €5m, making 130 appearances across all competitions.
Stellar Season and World Cup Form
Ryerson enjoyed an outstanding 2025-26 campaign, contributing 15 assists in 42 games — a tally only bettered by Michael Olise (19). His performances at the 2026 World Cup have further elevated his profile, particularly in Norway's stunning last-16 victory over Brazil, where he neutralized Vinicius Junior. Norway head coach Stale Solbakken praised Ryerson's resilience: 'It was the calves. Fortunately, the injury held. It's just the strain, probably because he hasn't trained enough. He'll look even better in the next game.'
Interest from Top Clubs
Bild reports that Ryerson's 'strong performances haven't gone unnoticed in England,' with Manchester United recently re-establishing contact with his representatives after first expressing interest in February. However, several elite European clubs are also monitoring the situation. Dortmund consider Ryerson one of their 'most important leaders' and plan to open contract talks once Norway's World Cup campaign ends. However, an offer exceeding €30m (£25m) would force 'serious consideration,' given Dortmund signed him for just €5m.
United's Defensive Needs
United, under new permanent head coach Michael Carrick, are seeking a more attack-minded right-back to compete with Diogo Dalot. Noussair Mazraoui failed to register a goal or assist in the Premier League last season, highlighting the need for reinforcement. Ryerson's current contract runs until June 2028, but Dortmund may be tempted by a significant profit.
Fitness Concerns
Ryerson was substituted on the hour-mark against Brazil after missing Norway's clash with Ivory Coast due to a hamstring problem. He received treatment but is expected to feature in the quarter-final against England. Solbakken confirmed the issue is minor, saying the injury 'held' and Ryerson will improve with more training.
Competition Ahead
United face fierce competition for Ryerson's signature, with several elite European teams circling. The Red Devils are also closing in on a second summer signing after a demand from Chelsea, as they look to strengthen under Carrick. Ryerson's versatility and consistency make him a prime target, but Dortmund are keen to retain their leader.
