Manchester City have secured an agreement with Malo Gusto to join from Chelsea this summer, despite a significant gap in valuations between the two clubs. The French international could reunite with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who is widely expected to be appointed at the Etihad.
Gusto's Move Follows Anderson Transfer
Gusto could become City's second major signing of the summer, as the club prepares to confirm Elliot Anderson's transfer from Nottingham Forest. The England star's move is expected to be completed in the coming days after City agreed a £116 million deal with the Midlands club.
While Chelsea have placed a £75 million price tag on Gusto, reports from France indicate the defender has sent encouraging signals to City's hierarchy about his willingness to move north. The FA Cup holders have made Gusto a primary target to bolster their right flank.
Competition and Chelsea's Stance
City face competition from other clubs and are reluctant to meet Chelsea's asking price at this stage. City had also shown interest in Marco Palestra before Chelsea made their decisive move. Palestra is set to be confirmed as Chelsea's first summer signing, adding to Xabi Alonso's extensive options on the right side. Alonso will also have Reece James and Josh Acheampong available, meaning Gusto could be sold for the right price.
James is Chelsea's captain, and the club have confirmed Acheampong is not for sale this summer, casting doubt on Gusto's future at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca's Influence on Gusto
The French full-back was a firm favourite of Maresca during his tenure in London, featuring 72 times in 18 months. While Gusto initially arrived as an attacking full-back hugging the touchline, Maresca also deployed him in a more inverted role. A £45 million bid could be sufficient for Chelsea to let go of the defender, who is currently competing at the World Cup.
Speaking last summer, Gusto praised Maresca's influence at Chelsea ahead of the Club World Cup final: "He's a top coach and that's why we're in the final, because of him – that includes getting into the Champions League for next season. He created a good team, good energy between us, so we are very happy. He's very detailed. He watches the team we face and focuses a lot on us, like how we're going to build, how we're going to press and the patterns we have to create between us. It helps us a lot. I think Maresca has added details – to think quickly, to defend together, to enjoy defending. Even many things about set-pieces. There are many details."
