Glazers Consider Selling Manchester United Stake Amid Internal Talks

Some members of the Glazer family, co-owners of Manchester United, are reportedly exploring the sale of their stakes in the club. According to Bloomberg, several family members have held internal discussions about selling, with some hoping to convince others to do the same. However, the talks are not unanimous, as certain members oppose a sale, which could complicate any potential deal.

The Glazers have owned Manchester United for over two decades, but their tenure has been marked by fan protests. Any buyer would face a significant price tag; in October 2023, Mirror Football reported that the Glazers would only consider offers exceeding £5 billion. This valuation factors in the club's potential worth if plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium materialise.

Currently, Avram and Joel Glazer serve as executive co-chairmen, while Kevin, Bryan, Darcie, and Edward Glazer are board directors. In February 2024, the family sold a 27.7% stake to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group for £1.25 billion, giving Ratcliffe control of football operations.

Market data from the New York Stock Exchange shows Manchester United shares trading at around $21 (£15.6), giving the club a market value of approximately $3.6 billion (£2.7 billion). However, the asking price is expected to be higher due to the voting rights attached to Glazer shares.

Speculation about a takeover has persisted, with Saudi businessman Turki Al-Sheikh hinting at a possible deal in October 2023. He is now reportedly close to acquiring Championship club Derby County.
