German media giant Axel Springer has agreed to acquire the Telegraph Media Group (TMG) for £575 million, ending a three-year ownership saga and thwarting Daily Mail owner DMGT's rival bid. The deal, announced on Friday, sees the Berlin-based publisher of Politico take control of the politically influential newspaper group.
The transaction follows a failed £500 million agreement between DMGT and RedBird IMI, the Abu Dhabi-backed consortium that had previously taken over TMG. RedBird IMI was forced to sell after the UK government blocked its ownership on foreign influence grounds. Axel Springer's bid now faces regulatory scrutiny from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, though both firms expressed confidence in a smooth approval process.
Axel Springer CEO Mathias Dopfner called owning The Telegraph 'a privilege and a duty,' vowing to preserve its editorial independence and invest in its growth. The company plans to expand the brand's US footprint, leveraging its Politico and Business Insider assets, and aims to make it 'the leading centre-right media outlet in the English-speaking world.'
The deal includes full ownership of TMG, with The Spectator magazine already sold separately for £100 million to hedge fund tycoon Sir Paul Marshall. DMGT criticised the UK's 'protracted and out-of-date' regulatory framework, claiming it disadvantages domestic newspaper groups in merger processes.
