Arbeloa Left Liverpool After Johnson Signing Baffled Him

Alvaro Arbeloa, recently appointed as Fulham's head coach, left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2009 after being baffled by the club's decision to sign Glen Johnson for £17.5 million. The transfer, overshadowed by Xabi Alonso's departure six days later, was a key factor in Liverpool's subsequent decline.

Arbeloa's Role at Liverpool

Arbeloa joined Liverpool from Deportivo in 2007 for a modest fee and quickly became a vital part of Rafa Benitez's defense. He made 41 appearances in his first full season and 43 in his final campaign, helping Liverpool push Manchester United close in the 2008/09 Premier League title race. The Reds finished with 86 points, losing just twice, and conceded only 27 goals—their best defensive record until the 2025/26 season.

Arbeloa's quiet presence was disrupted only by an on-pitch argument with Jamie Carragher during a game at West Brom. His versatility, having played centrally in Spain, made him a reliable right-back for Benitez.

The Johnson Signing and Arbeloa's Reaction

Benitez moved quickly to sign Glen Johnson from Portsmouth for £17.5 million, an attacking full-back seen as a way to add a new dimension to Liverpool's attack. Benitez acknowledged that Johnson's arrival could spell the end for Arbeloa, who had one year left on his contract. "We were thinking about bringing in players with quality," Benitez said. "He is also English and that is important for the Champions League list."

Arbeloa later recalled his reaction to the signing: "You think: ‘We’ve nearly won the league and the first thing you do is buy a £20m right-back?’" He added, "I said: ‘Listen, thanks for everything.’ He (Benitez) couldn’t say I had to stay. He had a right-back and I had a call from Madrid."

Departure and Aftermath

Liverpool received £3.5 million for Arbeloa, potentially rising to £5 million, a fee that did not reflect his importance to the team. At Real Madrid, Arbeloa won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, two Champions League titles, the Club World Cup, the World Cup, and another European Championship with Spain. Liverpool, meanwhile, slipped to seventh in the Premier League the following season, conceding 36 goals and losing 11 games, a decline that cost Benitez his job.

Johnson went on to play 200 games for Liverpool, double Arbeloa's total, but his impact is less fondly remembered by fans. Benitez's gamble to overhaul the defense, especially after a near-title-winning season, proved costly as Liverpool struggled to find consistency at right-back for years.
