AirAsia X Returns to UK After 14 Years with Budget Flights

AirAsia X has announced the return of its UK flights after a 14-year hiatus, offering budget long-haul services from London Gatwick Airport to Kuala Lumpur, with a stopover in Bahrain. The Malaysian low-cost carrier, which previously operated flights from Kuala Lumpur to London Heathrow until 2012, confirmed that ticket prices will become cheaper as fuel costs ease.

New Route and Schedule

The flights were originally scheduled to launch on June 26 but have been postponed due to the Middle East conflict. The new start date is August 27. According to Air Traveler Club, the service will operate four times a week until November 2, after which it will become a daily flight.

Flights from Kuala Lumpur depart at 10 PM local time, stop in Bahrain for two hours, and arrive at London Gatwick around 7:30 AM the following day. The aircraft used is an Airbus A330-300, seating between 285 and 377 passengers.

Cheaper Fares and Refunds

AirAsia X confirmed that the stopover in Bahrain and the use of Gatwick instead of Heathrow help keep fares affordable. Passengers affected by the postponement can receive refunds or reschedule their bookings.

Executives Welcome Return

Pierre-Hugues Schmit, Chief Executive at London Gatwick Airport, said: “The arrival of AirAsia X and flights to Kuala Lumpur is fantastic news for London Gatwick passengers. The new daily service will provide excellent opportunities to visit the city or onward connectivity across the region – ideal for holidaymakers, businesses and the many British‑Malaysian families who will now have even better options for visiting friends and relatives.”

Bo Lingam, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X, added: “Our return to London marks a significant milestone for AirAsia X and we’re excited to commence our operations at London Gatwick this June.”
