A blind taste test comparing 12 different sausages, including 10 supermarket own-brand options and two popular brands, has crowned Lidl's Deluxe Pork Sausages as the UK's best. Priced at just £2.49 for a 400g pack, the sausages scored 73% in the test conducted by 65 participants, outperforming options from M&S, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Aldi, and premium brands like Heck, The Jolly Hog, and The Black Farmer.
Testers praised the Lidl sausages for their "delectable taste," "moist consistency," and "just right" salt levels. However, the sausages are high in saturated fat, with two sausages containing 11.5g—more than half the recommended daily maximum for women and over a third for men.
Top Performers and Detailed Rankings
Right behind Lidl, Aldi's Specially Selected Pork Sausages, also priced at £2.49, scored 72%. Testers described them as "impressive all-rounders" with great "aroma," "meaty flavour," and "looks," but noted they needed a "slightly stronger herbal kick" to beat Lidl.
Morrisons secured the second spot with its The Best Thick Pork Sausages (£3.25 for 400g), also scoring 72%. These were praised for their "classic" flavour but had a "slightly coarser" texture compared to competitors.
Mid-Range and Lower Rankings
M&S ranked sixth with 71% for its Collection British Outdoor Bred Pork Sausages, while Sainsbury's Taste the Difference British Pork Sausages scored 70%. Other notable rankings include Asda Exceptional Classic Pork Sausages and Co-op Irresistible Pork Sausages, both at 71%, and Tesco Finest at 67%. At the bottom, Iceland Luxury The Ultimate Pork Sausages scored 56%, and Waitrose No.1 Free Range Pork Sausages ranked last with 53%.
