Residents in South Wales have been advised to keep windows and doors closed on Monday morning as smoke from an ongoing wildfire continues to spread across the region.
Blaze Near Llangynidr Reservoir
Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been tackling the fire at Llangynidr reservoir near Crickhowell for three days. The blaze covers an area of approximately 7km.
The fire service reported that the moorland fire is still ongoing, with crews remaining at the scene throughout the weekend to contain its spread.
Wind Change Affects Communities
A change in wind direction has resulted in smoke affecting several communities on Monday morning. A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "The wind direction this morning has changed and communities towards Blaenavon, Brynmawr, Pontypool and Newport are affected by the smoke."
As part of the ongoing assessment, a specialist firefighting helicopter will return today to support crews, contractors, and farmers on the ground, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
The spokesperson added: "We still expect to be at the scene for a few days and we will continue to review our response daily as conditions change."
Road Closures and Safety Advice
Llangynidr Road is closed, and emergency services advise that other local roads may also be closed. Residents are urged to avoid flying drones in the area, keep windows and doors closed if affected by smoke, seek medical advice if needed, and stay away from the area to allow emergency services to work safely.
