Smoke was visible across Liverpool on Wednesday evening after a scrap yard caught fire on Regent Road in Kirkdale. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) was alerted to the incident at around 8.29pm on September 9, with four fire engines attending and the first crews arriving at 8.34pm.
Large scrap pile alight
Firefighters discovered a large pile of scrap metal, measuring approximately 30m by 40m, on fire. Crews are using two main branches and a ground monitor to tackle the blaze, while working with staff at the site to prevent the fire from spreading.
An on-site crane is being used to move materials from the affected scrap pile, allowing firefighters to reach and damp down the burning material. A further hose reel jet is being used to damp down the affected area.
Ongoing incident
MFRS said crews were making "good progress" but the incident remains ongoing. People are being asked to avoid the area while firefighters continue to deal with the fire.
A spokesperson for MFRS said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) is currently in attendance at an incident on Regent Road, Kirkdale, on the evening of Wednesday 9 September."
"Crews were alerted at 8.29pm and arrived on scene at 8.34pm, with four fire engines attending. On arrival this is fire involving a pile of scrap metal measuring approximately 30m x 40m. Firefighters are using two main branches and one ground monitor."
