Autumn brings its own traditions, and for many, a countryside walk finished with a pub meal is a seasonal favourite. The weather is milder than in summer or winter, and as the season progresses, colourful foliage and misty mornings create striking scenery.
One walk that fits the bill perfectly is at Entwistle Reservoir, just north of Bolton in Lancashire. Visitors have compared the scenery to the Lake District, Scandinavia and even Canada.
A Flat, Scenic Route Around the Water
The reservoir, located next to the village of Edgeworth, offers a relatively flat and easy-to-follow route of around 2.5 miles that encircles the water. On one side, walkers enjoy views across the water; on the other, the path is lined with towering trees. A notable feature is a 10-foot steel heron sculpture at the water’s edge.
Trails peel off into the woodland, offering quintessential autumn scenery. On TripAdvisor, visitor Chris F said: “The walk around the reservoir is like being transported to the Lake District with scenic views all around. All this within a few miles of Bolton and Bury.”
Visitor Praise and Longer Options
Another reviewer, Steve R, wrote: “As a Boltonian I think this is one of the best walks in the area even though it's in Blackburn. Solid walking path all the way around the 2.5 mile walk with regular sitting areas dedicated to those loved ones that are lost to us. The scenery reminds me of Scandinavia or even Canada, it's a stunning way to spend your leisure time. You'll see squirrels every time and deer if you're there early enough. Beautiful, you should get out there, it will refresh your spirit.”
For a longer walk, Wayoh Reservoir is connected to Entwistle, though the terrain there is more uneven. The trail is a similar length, but walkers can cut across using Crow Trees Lane to shorten it. The Bradshaw Brook Viaduct can be spotted between the two reservoirs.
Finish at the Strawberry Duck
After the walk, the Strawberry Duck pub in Entwistle serves traditional Lancashire dishes such as Bury Black Pudding and Lancashire cheddar cheese and onion pie, alongside classics like fish and chips and burgers. The pub is conveniently located near the train station, making it easily accessible by public transport.
