The Met Office has issued a new weather warning for parts of Greater Manchester, with fog expected to cause difficult travel conditions from 6pm this evening (November 8) until 11am on Monday morning (November 10). The alert follows a night of disruption caused by heavy fog across the region on Saturday (November 7).
Fog causes weekend disruption
Heavy fog has already caused disruption across south Manchester this weekend. On Saturday, fans at Altrincham FC's FA Cup tie with Notts County struggled to see a penalty shootout clearly. Flights were also diverted from Manchester Airport, and attendees at fireworks displays south of the city were left disappointed.
The new warning covers areas of Trafford, Stockport, Salford and Tameside. Fog is expected to lead to slower journey times, with possible delays to bus and train services, and there is also a chance of disruption to flights at Manchester Airport.
Visibility down to 50 metres
According to Met Office forecasters, fog patches will form readily again during Sunday evening and overnight, becoming extensive by Monday morning. Some dense patches of fog are expected, with visibility down to around 50 metres or less in some places. Fog is expected to start thinning slowly later on Monday morning.
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary. Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey. Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice."
Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
