Met Office yellow fog warning for 33 UK areas

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for fog affecting parts of England overnight Saturday into Sunday, with visibility expected to drop below 50 metres in some locations.

The warning comes into force at 12am on Sunday, November 8, and remains in place until 10am that morning. It covers areas of the East Midlands, London and south east England, south west England and the West Midlands.

Areas Affected by the Warning

People in the affected regions are being warned of potential delays. The Met Office warning states: "Patchy, dense fog is expected to develop during Saturday night with the visibility falling to less than 50 metres in places."

It continues: "Fog is expected to become increasingly widespread within this area during the second half of the night before only slowly clearing during Sunday morning; slowest across parts of the West Country and central southern England."

The full list of affected areas includes Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire in the East Midlands; Bracknell Forest, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Oxfordshire, Portsmouth, Reading, Southampton, Surrey, West Berkshire, West Sussex, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham in London and south east England; Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole, Bristol, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire in south west England; and Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Warwickshire, West Midlands Conurbation and Worcestershire in the West Midlands.

Travel Advice and Fog Impact

Fog occurs when a cloud forms at ground level, reducing visibility to less than 1000 metres. Dense fog, where visibility falls below 100 metres, can cause severe travel disruption. The Met Office explains that the thickest fogs tend to occur in industrial areas where more pollution particles allow water droplets to coalesce and grow.

Issuing advice for those in the affected areas, the Met Office says: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary."

It adds: "Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey. Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice."
