Flight Disruptions at Catania Airport
The airport has faced repeated disruption in recent days as activity from Mount Etna intensified. Arrivals were suspended on Monday, August 10, with restrictions extended because of continued volcanic ash in the atmosphere. Passengers have reported cancelled or diverted flights as operations were affected.
Catania International Airport, a major gateway to eastern Sicily, handles millions of passengers annually, including many British holidaymakers. The airport has previously been forced to suspend flights during eruptions when volcanic ash threatened aviation.

The eruption has produced glowing lava flows and a huge plume of dark smoke and ash rising above the Sicilian landscape.
