The Met Office has issued another yellow thunderstorm warning for Wales as bank holiday plans look set to be disrupted by thunder, lightning, and heavy rain.
Some local events organised for the last bank holiday of what has been a very dry and warm summer have had to be cancelled due to the severe weather, with forecasters warning flooding is possible in places.
Warning covers 14 areas
The new yellow warning, which comes into force at midday on Saturday, covers 14 parts of the country. The worst of the weather will be in the south according to forecasters, with downpours of rain expected alongside the potential for hail and lightning.
The warning covers Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan from midday until 9pm.
Forecast details
The Met Office forecast says: "An area of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move across this region during the afternoon and early evening affecting areas in the west first and moving progressively east towards evening with drier weather following."
"Some places could see 15-25mm of rain in an hour, and 30mm in two to three hours, with hail and lightning additional hazards."
Forecasters warn driving conditions are likely to be affected by the poor weather, with journeys expected to take longer due to spray, standing water, and potentially hail. There could also be delays to train services.
Potential impact
Flooding of homes and businesses is also possible, and there could be damage to buildings due to lightning strikes. People could also experience power cuts.
The weather has already caused some disruption with local events being cancelled, including some sports matches. Swansea Bay Parkrun was called off following an inspection of the course, and Treorchy Food Festival and Tircoed Summer Festival have been postponed.
The bank holiday weekend looks set to be very wet on the whole, but Saturday is expected to see the worst of the weather. Rain will gradually clear by Monday afternoon.
