Tributes have been flooding in for a 'legend' of the North East fish and chip sector, after his death earlier this week. Pianist Mike Waller, a retired music teacher held in high regard by everyone who knew him or heard him play, helped create so many memories for people who dined at Trenchers inside Whitley Bay's famous Spanish City dome.
A beloved part of the dining experience

Mike's piano playing was a huge part of what makes the atmosphere at Trenchers so unrivaled, with his music providing a beautiful accompaniment to many people's meals. Just a few weeks ago, Trenchers encouraged diners to hear Mike provide 'the perfect lunchtime soundtrack.'
Announcement of his passing
His death was announced by Spanish City on their Facebook page on Thursday. Sharing photos of Mike at his piano inside the Dome, wearing his trademark striped jacket, Spanish City wrote: 'It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of our resident pianist, Mike. Since we opened, Mike has been a much-loved part of Trenchers and the Dome, filling Spanish City with his music and bringing warmth and a little extra magic to so many evenings.'
Their tribute added: 'We’re incredibly grateful for all the music, memories and happy moments he gave us over the years. He will be missed very, very much. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Mike’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. We know the music ‘up there’ just got a little better, Mike.'
Customers share their memories
So many people have commented on the post to share their sadness at Mike's death and recall the good times he helped create. One customer replied: 'So sorry to hear this. We used to time our visits to hear him and bring family and friends to hear him when they visited. Kind thoughts to all who were close to him.'
Another commented: 'So sorry to hear this. We loved hearing him play and my 2 little boys especially loved listening to him on Christmas Eve. His music became part of a little Christmas tradition for us.'
