The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a safety alert for a shampoo product sold online to UK customers. In a safety notice issued this week, it said that the Bare Anatomy Anti-Dandruff Shampoo posed a risk of chemical reactions. The shampoo was sold via Amazon, eBay, OnBuy and TikTok, and the import was stopped at the border.
Serious chemical risk identified
The product presents a serious chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional, also known as lilial or BMHCA. Butylphenyl methylpropional is not permitted in cosmetic products as it may harm the reproductive system and may cause skin sensitisation.
The shampoo was coming into the UK from India. The product does not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, the Cosmetics Regulation.
Undeclared allergens above threshold
In addition, three allergenic fragrance substances — Citronellol (187 mg/kg), Linalool (195 mg/kg), and Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone (188 mg/kg) — were present above the 100 mg/kg labelling threshold for rinse-off products but were not declared on the ingredients list as required.
A Product Safety Report is an official notice issued when a consumer good is found to be unsafe. Corrective actions often include recalls, but in this instance, the product did not make it past the border.
Other notices and recalls
Several other product safety notices were issued by the OPSS this week. Also rejected at the border were a Mosquito Killer Lamp and the Bukbas Dinosaur Swim Ring, both sold via Amazon.
Meanwhile, a number of recalls have been issued recently. They include the Sammic Portable Electric Liquidiser, the MESOLAB Leaper Cute Anime Advent Calendar, the Char-Broil Patio Bistro BBQ Grills and the ASDA Hapello Power Train.
